The lugged rubber sole grips on ice, the waterproof fleece-lined upper keeps road salt off the pads, and snowballs no longer build up between the toes. Round here the detail that mattered was not the sole but the second velcro strap: easy to overlook in the shop, and at the end of the street it is the reason no boot was left behind in a drift.
