Dog and cat toothbrush kit: the last job of the evening, after the walk and before bed.

Tartar starts from age two and ends at the vet under anaesthetic; two minutes of brushing a day prevents it. The kit has everything for a gentle start, from the silicone finger brush that gets the animal used to the idea, to the double-headed brush for the back molars. Round here it happens after the last walk: head torch still on, the dog is sat by the basin before the finger brush is out of the case, and the cat drops by to check she has not been forgotten.

Toothpaste not included: use pet toothpaste only, never human toothpaste. Four colours to choose from: blue, pink, green, purple.

Work up over one to two weeks: first let your pet lick the toothpaste off your finger, then move to the finger brush on the canines only, then to the brush on the outer face of the teeth, the only surface truly reachable. Thirty seconds per side is enough. A red line along the gums, suddenly strong breath or difficulty chewing call for a vet visit rather than more vigorous brushing.
